Well, here we are in the Dog Days of Summer. So far, we have been blessed with reasonable weather, but the hot, hazy and humid days are sure to come. When the heat's on it's hard to function: it seems to sap your energy and the thought of doing anything outdoors can be daunting.

The heat forces a change in how fast we move, where we go, what we do … and what we eat. Most of us prefer to eat light, healthy meals full of fresh fruit and vegetables. That's where we come in. July also marks our nation's Independence Day Celebration, perhaps the best family gathering of the year. I love the Fourth of July for the fireworks and grilling on the barbecue with friends and family. Recently, I was watching the coverage of the death of NBC reporter/analyst, Tim Russert, and the tribute that was paid by his colleagues. It reminded me of all that is great about our democracy — this wonderful experiment in self-rule —and the beacon of hope we represent to the world.

Are we perfect? Not by a long shot. But we are free to examine and discuss our nation's and leaders' imperfections and to fight to change them for the better. What could be better than that?
